Ev's Tabistry Mermaid Tale!

It's taken me longer than I planned, but I had to share the incredible pic that Ev sent me.

This HAS to be the most ambitious tabistry project I've seen to date! Wow! Look at ALL those tabs! The scale pattern looks great for their fishy mermaid tails.

She used a discount jersey fabric cut to about 1/2 a centimeter, which is narrow. This is so it would be flexible to move in.

"I chose white because i planned on having a black light and i wanted us to glow. I had all our friends collecting poptabs! took forever!! i offered 1 cupcake for every 10 tabs. i dont know where you get your tabs! One of my friend's mom's owns a restaurant, without her help i don't know where i could have gotten this many in time!"

I wonder if we can still cash in on those cupcakes? :D She commented that they ran out of time finishing these costumes. Somehow, I'm not surprised. One mermaid would be a big challenge to take on. Kudos for seeing all three through!

"...we were actually still weaving minutes before the first show! Thank you so much for your website, and your inspiration!! The fins looked better than i imagined they would. i received lots of positive comments." - Ev

Thanks, Ev, for sharing your epic project with us! Hope the show was a huge success!

  1. OMG! I just squealed like a ten year old Jonas Brother's fan. *shudder*

I've had a huge love of mermaids since I was a little kid. Now that I'm older, I've been planning on making myself a tail. <3 (Check Youtube for Mermaid Sasha.) Now, I've been collecting tabs for quite some time. I'm not sure how many I have, but I now have inspiriation. I think I'm going to add 'scales' to my tail.

  2. LOL! You're too funny. :)

That mermaid video looks awesome! It would be so fun to swim around like that! I've never tried a monofin before. Just the regular swim fins, which were surprisingly easy to swim in when we went snorkeling.

The tabs add such great texture to the tail. Plus, they are pretty light weight and won't rust in the water. :) I'm currently experimenting with the round shaped piece that you punch out of the can with the tab. Would make perfect scales. They would shimmer catching the light as you move. I'll post the videos. There are some great ideas in them.

  3. I've gone swimming with normal fins, but I tied my ankles together (this was when I was a lot younger) so it was similar to a monofin. Though for my tail, I'm going to get the mono.

Yeah, the weight is one of my biggest worries. But then again, I've got over 4000 tabs saved up and they weigh around a pound all together. So I don't think it'll be too bad.

I finally made myself a poptab bracelet, even though I started saving a few months ago.

Anywho, back to the tail. Once I get mine finished, I'll have to put pictures and some videos online. Then link them here to you. <3
