Lina's Prom Dress

To break from the usual ramblings about my own work, I thought I'd start sharing some unique works created by other awesome tabistry artists. So if you've got something to show send it on over.

I had to start with this one. Because she actually commented on one of my pieces that, I quote:

"these things are so much more creative than what I've made. Guh. Luckyyyyy."

Yeah, right. Her name is Lina Fernandez and she made her senior prom dress out of tabs in 2008. I think she did an amazing job. So, I thought I would post it here so others could tell her how awesome it really is.

She has what looks like two different weaves in the dress. As she states in the article, the skirt was made separately and the two pieces sewn together. The weave of the upper portion is a different variation than my work. I believe it is two layers sandwiched together in offset horizontal rows. I love how she handled the bottom edge of the dress. From what I can tell the vertical strands of tabs swing freely. Well, I'm impressed. I wore boring satin to both my proms.

She shares more pics of it here. And, the article about it can be found here.

  2. Whoa! Thanks for this attention. It really makes me feel all special-like. Hahahahaha. So I counted and that dress has 6,328 can-tabs total. Just so you know..... in case you wanted to. Hahahahahaha. However, I recently changed the skirt to be like the top, so now it has 2,618 can-tabs.
    Be well,

  3. It's a great dress.

Lina, you deserve the attention for making it. That is definitely a lot of tabs! More than I've ever attempted on one project. You'll have to share some pics of the new skirt. Are you planning to make any other items in the future?

  4. Probably just be a copycat and make corsets and ren-fair type-stuff. I REALLY want to try making the shoes. That's got me pretty excited. I have enough tabs left over to make 2-2.5 dresses. Lately I've been trying to sell simple things like bracelets, necklaces and belts, since I can't seem to get a job.

  5. Wow, Lina! I'd say that's a lot of tabs! I want to try making pirate boots out of tabs. But, I think I need to use a more traditional sole. Especially to get a heel to work. I'm thinking of cutting up a used pair of shoes to attach the tabs to.

  6. That's a genius idea! Boots must look beautiful. If I had any money, I'd buy more ribbon to make things. I should probably put the skirt back on the dress first, though.

  7. Wish me luck getting the boots done. I made an attempt at cutting up a pair of canvas shoes I had around to experiment. It's been really difficult making holes in the reinforced heel part. I need to find better tools before I continue with them. :)

I don't use a lot of ribbon unless it is on a small project. Most tend not to stretch and snag easy. Cutting strips out of remnant fabric or used clothes works best for me. Not as expensive as ribbon, either.
